Featured Photographer: Crystal Raynard Photography

We are so honored to have Crystal Raynard Photography as our guest judge this week! Please take a moment to learn more about her and view some of her AMAZING work below!

Tell us a little about yourself (family, hobbies, etc.)

I am a Mom of 2 beautiful daughters aged 7&8, and one little man age 1, We are your typical busy family, My girls play baseball and take Tap Dancing, it is never a dull moment. Married my High School sweetheart 9 years ago,and love that he always understands that sometimes I just need to capture that shot. I run a in home daycare in our small town of southwestern Ontario, so most of my days are spent with some of the best company around, Children. I also run a Playgroup every week, and enjoy heading to teach the kids on Sunday's in Sunday school at our Church. I love working with children as much I love to work with my camera and they seem to work hand in hand together quiet nicely. For hobbies other than photography I enjoy reading, and enjoy it so much I had to trade in books for a electronic reader, I was running out of shelf space. I also enjoy crafting. I just started a little adventure of painting and selling canvas', and hope to soon add more of my sewing pieces to the mix as well. I also enjoy the outdoors, we as a family love to go hiking, fishing, camping and spending a day out on the water!

What got you started in taking lifestyle images (or photography in general)?

I believe the thing that got me into lifestyle photography and really photography in general, was wanting to capture my point of view to show others how I see it through the view finder. I wanted to capture every little detail of my families lives to have something for them to look back on, I don't have many photos of my brothers and I growing up, and once I started got hooked right away. The 365 photo project also got me into taking more of the lifestyle images as well, I never realized how much I was missing in our lives and how much more I would learn in my photography journey by making the decision to break away from the posing, and the smiling looking at the camera.

Any photographers that you look up to?

I have so many photographers that I look up, A few years back I found Nick Kelsh's How to Photograph your Baby/Lifestyle page. I looked up to his work and learned so much from his teachings, but possibly  the best part of that site was in meeting other photographers, a small group of us all became friends a few years ago and I look up to them every single day. They have pushed and taught me the most when I needed it the most, they have helped make me into me the photographer I am today.

What is in your camera bag?

My camera bag is probably more on the bigger side then it needs to be, I like to be prepared and tend to carry for that, maybe that is the mother side of me. First off my have Pentax K100D, with my SCM Pentax-FA 28-80mm lens, it never leaves my camera. I have extra batteries, extra memory card, lens filter, tripod and Light Scoop. In case of Emergency I have wipes,a comb, band aids and chocolates for when the little ones need some encouragement!

If you could shoot anybody in the world, anywhere, who and where?

Really I would just simply would like to go back a few years and capture more of my older girls growing up. I was more into sit still, smile nice, put on this nice pretty dress type of a photography, I spend so much money taking them when they were babies to a studio and come out with lovely photos but nothing like the photos I am taking now a days chasing around our 1 year old. My girls will often comment on how they wish they could have a more photos of them as babies.

Featured Photographer : One Sock Pictures

I am so excited to have the owner of One Sock Pictures as our guest judge this week! Her images are amazing and capture the "every day" perfectly. Let's learn a bit more about her!

Tell us a little about yourself (family, hobbies, etc.)

I'm a SAH, homeschooling mom to three boys (ages 10, almost 12, and 14) and wife for 15 years.  It's pretty much always loud at our house!  We live in a tiny town in Indiana, where I grew up and have lived basically my entire life.  I love books, and daydream about having an entire room that is wall-to-wall shelving full of them.  We are really involved in our church, and I work in the counseling ministry there.  Getting an opportunity to help people is such a rewarding experience!  Other than that, I love herbs and natural health, and I'm blessed to have the most amazing friends who are a big part of our life.

What got you started in taking lifestyle images (or photography in general)?

I bought my first DSLR about three years ago.  I had never been interested in photography up to that point.  Using the camera in auto quickly became frustrating, so I purchased a book and learned the manual settings.  I found helpful resources online and spent a lot of time reading about how to take better photos.  That led to photographing not only my own family, but my friends and their families as well.  Not long into it, I felt like something  was lacking in my photos but I couldn't pinpoint what it was.  I tried so hard to copy what I was seeing as "popular" on the internet and it left me feeling empty.  That's when I discovered documentary style photography and fell in love with the authenticity and raw photos it produced.  It was life in a very real form, and I was hooked from that point on.  I began to build my business around that.  Now, my goal is to produce work that is sincere and true to the people I'm photographing, and to use all things in life - the good, the bad, and the mundane - as inspiration.

Any photographers that you look up to?

Jennifer Tonetti-Spellman has been a huge influence for me!  She was the first real lifestyle photographer that I found, and encouraged me to stick with what I was passionate about.  She pushes me, and I need that!  ;)  I also love Molly Flanagan's work.  There is something so true about her photos that I keep going back to them.  Some of the older photographers have been inspiring, also - Vivian Maier, Irving Penn, Milton Greene.  It's not the same style of  work I do, but they are amazing.

What is in your camera bag?

I carry a Jo Totes bag that I love!  I keep it light and simple.  My camera body is a Canon 5D Mark II, and my main lens is a 35mm 2.0.  I also carry an 85mm 1.8, but find that the 35mm rarely leaves my camera.  Let's see... a lens pen, some contact solution (bc I learned the hard way that I might need it!), a battery charger and extra battery, and a card case.  That's about it.

If you could shoot anybody in the world, anywhere, who and where?

If I could shoot anybody, anywhere, I would love to go back in time and capture my family while I was growing up.  One of my favorite things to do was to sit with my grandmother and look at old photographs as she would tell me stories about all the people and places.  It was never about how perfect the photos were, just the mere fact that life was documented seemed so special.  A lot of those people aren't with us anymore.  It makes me wish I would have been more interested in photography when my boys were smaller, too.  They grow up so fast!

Featured Photographer - Thurston Photographs

What an honor to have Thurston Photographs as the guest judge this week at My Beautifully Chaotic Lifestyle! She won us over with her fun family playing a game at the table that was submitted. Lets learn a little more about her below!!:

1. Tell us a little about yourself (family, hobbies, etc.)

So I've been married almost 15 years, and have 4 awesome kids.  Two boys that are 11 and 10 and two girls, 5 and 3.  It's a busy life!  (I know that's what you're thinking.  :)
We are active in our LDS Church, my boys do scouting, piano and karate.  My girls will start karate this summer but mostly they're just having fun, enjoying life.  I have my Bachelors in Fine Arts Management and worked as a production manager for local theatre companies before starting our family.  I've been a photographer for about 3 years now.

Last summer I suffered an injury to my right eye.  After 3 surgeries and a billion office visits later, I can see about 30-40% out of it.  Which is an awesome miracle that I'm grateful for.  I'm only allowed about 90 minutes of screen time a day, which is hard but has turned into a huge blessing.  I have to work hard to stay within my limit so my internet cruising has been severely limited.  :)  I take more time to nail it in camera so that my post-processing is minimal.  I've turned an 8 hour post production process into 3 hours.  I'm so happy about that!  I've learned to eliminate the crap and shoot what truly matters.

2. What got you started in taking lifestyle images (or photography in general)?

The photographs that get me hot and bothered are the ones that present a universal truth.  Sometimes that's joy in the motherhood journey, sometimes that's the angst and sorrow of time marching on.  When photographs are real and authentic, they really convey something that we can all identify with and that to me, is great art.  For me, that's the lifestyle genre.  When I realized you can let go of perfect eye contact, lighting control, and matching outfits, and create photographs that truly meant something not just to the client but to everyone who saw them, that's when I knew Lifestyle was what inspired me.

3. Any photographers that you look up to?

I love me some Jennifer Tonetti- Spellman, she really gave me my first, big push.  Because family pictures are what pays the bills, I aspire to be as good as the amazing Wendy Whitacre with Blue Lily.  My best friend, Michelle Jones has captured some images that have brought me to my knees.  She has found honor and validation in documenting the journey of everyday life with special kids.  Talk about inspiring!

4. What is in your camera bag?

I've got a super cute Cheeky Lime bag that gets me tons of compliments (ego stroke!).  In it, I have a Canon 6D, with a 24-105L 4.0 that I use 90% of the time.  The other 10% is the trusty Nifty Fifty 1.8.  My old 7D is my back up with the Tamron 28-75 2.8.

If you could shoot anybody in the world, anywhere, who and where?

Honestly?  I'd go back in time and document my two sons when they were little and up to crazy antics.  I paid good money for professional photography once a year but I missed the crazy chaos at home.  The way Jonah ran around corners, the way Marcus walked at only 9 months so he was this tiny baby running around on two feet.  That time was such a blur for me and so little of it was captured.  Can't get that time back, dang it.

Absolutely amazing!
